Almost monthly in the U.S., a college or fraternity makes the national news because of an episode of underage drinking or hazing resulting in bodily injury or worse.

In surveying more that 17,000 students at randomly selected 4-year colleges across the U.S., a study found that 86% of those who live in fraternity houses were binge drinkers, compared with 45% of non-members.

Members of large national fraternities include Robert Redford, Ted Turner, the president of General Motors, the owner of the Dallas Cowboys, Bob Dole, and many other prominent public figures.
